In the RARE SENSE Manifesto, I talk about the three major components that contribute to overall mind fitness: Maintenance, Orientation, and Development.
Maintenance is what most people think of as physical fitness and consists of eating well, exercising, and getting adequate sleep. But it also includes breathwork. These four factors determine the underlying health of our brains and bodies. Orientation is akin to many mindfulness practices and involves choosing our location at any given moment, recognizing and processing our emotions, focusing our awareness, and noticing when that attention strays. Development is how we then grow our minds. What can we learn, apply, solve, and create? Learning happens in two ways: academically through acquiring knowledge or by developing a skill.
This week I want you to work on that second way. It can be something you already enjoy or an entirely new endeavor. But it must involve your body somehow: playing an instrument, woodworking, archery, juggling, etc. Thirty minutes a day of trying to get better at it. Create some new neurons and expand your mind.
