I’ve made a concerted effort to step up my journaling game recently. It still doesn’t come naturally to me, but forcing myself to jot something down for a few minutes every morning is useful.
It’s even better if I work to notice my thoughts beforehand. So this week, let’s do a simple combo exercise first thing every day. Once you’ve wiped the sand from your eyes and gotten some coffee, spend eight minutes meditating. Focus specifically on unhelpful thought patterns that arise. Remember not to frame whatever you are thinking as positive or negative. It’s either helpful or unhelpful.
Once you’ve done that, take another eight minutes to write down these patterns and then a counter to each. How can you break thought loops that don’t serve you and replace them with ones that do? Become aware, disidentify, and substitute.
